Kerala Cultural Association of British Columbia (KCABC)

The KCABC, a non-profit organization, was instituted in 1998 by malayalees, for malayalees all across the lower mainland, BC, Canada. KCABC was formed from the breakup of another association called Malayalee Cultural Association of British Columbia (MCABC). At present there are around 150 families who are members of the association and this number is increasing rapidly as time goes.

The purposes of the KCABC society are:

(a)    To preserve and promote Malayalee culture, values, language and life

(b)    To assist new immigrants to integrate with Canadian society

(c)    To serve Malayalees in British Columbia

Information on annual Events

Kerala Cuisine Potluck

     This event takes place during the spring season of every year. People from around the lower gather on this occasion to get to know each other and introduce themselves to new members of the association. It also present the opportunity to demonstrate your culinary capabilities, especially in the field of Kerala cuisine. People are given a  wide variety of food items to choose from that range from Chor (Rice) to pappadam (pappad) to kori curry (Chicken). There are usually light entertainment present for adults and fun and games for kids.

 

Picnic Mania

                                        The picnic is usually held during the summer when the sun is shining in all its glory. This is a much awaited event to the members of our society because they get to enjoy the outdoors as well as take part in games and other activities present throughout the day. The picnic starts off at around 10:00am in the morning and ends at 4:00pm in the evening. Lunch, which usually is a BBQ (Veg and Non-veg), is provided by the association. Some of the games that is played during the day are Soccer, Volleyball, Races (various types), Tug of War, Musical chair and many more. Members of our society leave the day having lots of fun and with a satisfied grin on the their face knowing that they are helping to promote malayalee spirit to the community.

Onam Festival

      Onathappan is coming! To enjoy the festivities prepare The producer of the Zindagi program Mr.Atish Ram has agreed to cover our onam celebration for the Zindagi program. The venue for the wonderful and auspicious event is the Fleetwood Community Center - 15996 - 84 Ave, Surrey, on September 16th (Saturday), from 4:30pm to 9:00pm. The chief guest attending our program is Hon Sue Hammell, Minister of Immigration & Multiculturalism and the Minister responsible for public affair. Since this event is a potluck dinner, each individual or family is requested to bring one vegetarian food item. People contact Shobana Daniel for further information.

    

 

Christmas Celebration

   Finally, the last event of the year is the Christmas celebration that takes place during the last month of the year. Kerala has the greatest percentage of Christians in India and the people of kerala all get together to celebrate this auspicious day with Christmas carols, songs, dances, fireworks and what not. The KCABC organizes a function that usually comprises of similar events (Christmas carols, songs, dances, skits, etc). Food is usually catered by a restaurant of the committees' choice. Members of our society, from various religions, come together to participate in this function and have a wonderful time.
